Race report RCBash Sweden LSOR Cup #4 in Slottsbron

The Castlebridge Arena is a very special track built on an old dump covered with bark and wooden shavings. This creates a unique surface, it’s soft and light and develops a lot of holes and bumps. Some people would call it character, and that would show to be a very determining factor.

This is fourth race in the RCBash Sweden Large Scale Offroad Cup consisting of a total of five races with one drop race. We’ve been on the podium in every single race this year but have had small issues preventing us from taking that first place.

Unfortunately this day started as bad as last time. The first qualies went well with a win and we started in pole for the 1/8 finals. We changed from Astro Max to GRP W91 for tires, which we stayed with for the rest of the day. We got out good in the start but in the third corner after the big jump we got hit from the side of one of the other cars dislocating my pipe and I lost 3 laps trying to get it back with various things lying on the ground, including a rake. Touching a hot pipe with your bare hands is not a good idea!

This put us down in the B-group and with the point system we have where every heat counts this is very bad as you loose a minimum of 10 points by this out of a maximum of 100 points during a whole day. So again we were back to damage control. Now we just need to win all the rest of the heats to gather as much points as possible and take points from others. The cup is very close this year so every point is extremely important.

We won the quarterfinal B to bump up to the A group again and race in the semi A. This was a close race and Mikael Eriksson was very close in the end but we managed to take the win and secure a place in the A-final. The system we have counts all the points from the heats during the day to determine who goes directly to the A-final, with one extra bump spot from the B-final.

We stayed with the same setup during the whole day except moving in the shocks on the lower arms in the back to get a little bit softer suspension as the track got worse.

When it was time for the A-final the track was really like a moon landscape with craters, no perfect line you just have to work your way thru the holes and bumps and be nimble on the throttle. We started in fourth place as you count all the points from previous races and due to the early mishap we lost a good 10 points. But I know the start wasn’t that important due to the track conditions. Just keep it steady and have patience. We got away to a good start but had one of two marshalling situations at the second lap. But we knew others were going to have problems as well and we found a good pace where we could drive without any accidents. After about 6 minutes we were leading and after that we could hold that position for the rest of the final even if Mikael was close at one point but then made som mistakes so we could extend our lead again.

The final was a real challenge and it felt good taking a win as we have had two second places and one third this season. It was about time to take the win again.

As many had problems during the day nobody could collect a lot of points so we managed to keep our lead in the series and even put some more point behind us two second and third place. But it’s only a margin of 7 and 13 points and as I said you can loose 10 points just in a bad accident which sends you down to the B group so anything can happened at the final race in Linköping in three weeks. Looking forward to an exciting final with a lot of good racing at a track we really like. The question is if we will be able to get the Ultron ready or if we need to bring out the 5ive-X one final time. In three weeks time we will know…
