N-R-P Ultron Zr Build #6 (Sidepods, pipe, wing, airfilter)
Starting with the side pods. These might not be the least favourite part of the car. The fitting is not perfect and you can either mount them underneath the chassis as designed but this makes the screw heads very sensitive for being destroyed. Many are mounting the sidepods on top of the chassis as this make the chassis very clean and smooth underneath and no destroyed screens. The downside is that id doesn't fit as well and opens up for dust to get in more easily. You have to cut openings for the servo mounts. We still choose to mount it on top as we think this is the best compromise, we might choose to get another set of side pods and try underneath as well.
The air filter is fairly simple, the snorkel has a ridge that holds the filter in place as well as keep dirt out. We choose to put a zip tie on the air filter cover to make sure no dust is leaking in that way. We also sprayed the inside of the filter with Motul air filter oil. The outer part should never be oiled!
The wing mount it very simple and is in white delrin that unfortunately makes it look like a prototype part instead of being in black plastic as all the other plastic parts. You have to drill some new holes on the provided MCD wing as the CC measurement is not the same. Not a big deal but still another custom fitting you have to do. Otherwise we like that NRP is using the MCD wing as we have very good experience with that win. It's light and durable.
The bumber is just a big piece of soft plastic that you're supposed to wrap around and mount. This was not easy at all. You have to heat the plastic to make it even softer so you can bend it. We used a hairdryer which didn't generate enough heat so it was quit tricky. But we started by mounting the bumber on the chassis so we could then have a solid mount to bend it around. It's just fastened with another zip tie at the top.
The last big thing to mount on the car to make it operational is the pipe. This is a silenced titanium pipe from Samba. It's really light, you save a lot of weight by going with the titanium option. But it's quite pricey, we also heard that it produces a different sound. We're looking forward to hear that.
The brace holding the pipe above the tank is not ideal. We know that NRP is working on a better solution but this will work in the meantime. I would rather see a mount that supports the pipe from underneath instead but it's probably not that easy to do with the limited amount of space. We're thinking of making a heat shield between the tank and the pipe to keep the gas cool inside the tank. Another bummer with the pipe is that the stinger sticks out and you have to make a hole in the body for it. But there is a reason for this that we might see in a future Ultron…
