Masami Hirosaka
Early years
Masami was first brought into RC car racing at the age of seven by his father Masaaki; a former motorcycle racer, who finished 2nd at the 1971 Suzuka 6 Hours, a research and development employee of ABC Hobby and later with Yokomo and radio controlled car racer and designer, when he brought him a Tamiya Lamborghini Countach. They raced together for four years until upon realizing Masami was the better driver, Masaaki retired from racing to focus on becoming his mechanic.
In 1987, during a world championship round for the 4WD off-road at Romsey, England, Hirosaka arrived as a privateer with a Schumacher CAT, bar being provided power sources from HPI Japan. He had shown promise during practice and was brought into attention by Phil Booth, Schumacher's works driver who referred him to Cecil Schumacher, who provided him a longer wheelbase version called the CAT XL, then unavailable in Japan and was raced by a majority of racers. Despite being near-stock with much of the running gear added on from his old CAT, Hirosaka managed to win the title. After the win, he was given numerous offers from sponsors before he ultimately settled with Yokomo.
Later activities
As well as driving for Yokomo and Associated Electrics where he helps develop and design new cars and tests the resulting prototypes, Hirosaka held a job as a sales engineer for Yokomo. Of all his IFMAR championship wins, only his first title was won driving cars from neither of these manufacturers. He was driving a Schumacher CAT XL.
For once or twice a week, he practices for 100 runs, a majority of these is done on-road to improve his reflexes.
In a 1998 interview with Germany's KEIL DTM magazine, Hirosaka listed his other hobbies as computers and theater. His father who is now semi-retired, runs an RC car preparation service whilst doing contract work for Kyosho. In a 1999 interview with RCCA, he said that he has appeared several times on Japanese TV. He also says that he has several non-RC sponsors, such as Pioneer.
In his later career, he mentored teammate and compatriot Naoto Matsukura[8] and was the lead organizer of the 2015 IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championship[9]
Equipment
Throughout his career, Masami preferred to race with stick transmitters, largely as when he began racing, Japanese branded wheel transmitters did not exist; he once experimented with wheels but felt sticks gave better car control. Up until 1987, he used Futaba transmitter; after that he switched to KO Propo which he used through his career. Under his arrangement with Yokomo, his car ran on Reedy motors, a subsidiary of Associated Electrics.
Throughout his career, Masami has always raced in the green over white with pink flames (similar style to those found typically in hot rods), but since the 1990s, the pink colour has become less dominant part of the colour as he added the orange and red to form part of his current colour scheme.
Achievements
Throughout his competition career, Hirosaka has a total of 307 victories out of a total of 447 races, with 47 second-place finishes and 27 third.
He has a total of 37 World Championship starts with 25 podium appearances including 14 championship titles and 35 A-main appearances.
Out of a total of 70 JMRCA All-Japan Championship appearances, he won 52 of those spanning 21 consecutive years (1986-2006), 67 of those are A-main appearances.
In 1998, he is one of two drivers to achieve an electric car clean sweep at the JMRCA All-Japan Championship, the only driver to achieve this more than once (also 1987, 1989 and 1992) and the only one to achieve five out of five wins in eligible classes, a feat no longer possible since 2005 when the 1:10 Racing class was discontinued.
An article by Radio Control Car Action list him on the top spot as the five greatest driver of all-time in 2010 In the 2015 edition of the Top 10 best of all-time, he was beaten to the spot by Ryan Cavalieri.
Listed in RCCA in its May issues as one of the 10 Best Drivers between 1989 up to 1992. When the readers ranking was introduced, he was ranked 5th in 1996, 2nd in 1998 and 3rd in 1999. Hirosaka is the only few non-US drivers to be honoured and the only foreigner to regularly appear in the list.

2002 1/12 World Championship CarIFMAR 1:12th EP On-Road World Championship in SOUTH AFRICA
The car used in this race is the Associated RC12L3 fully tuned by Yokomo. The material, shape and thickness of the main chassis, as well as the position of the battery, have been thoroughly tested on-site in advance, making this a special car which can handle low-grip asphalt surfaces. It was a rare car which gained an advantage over other cars as the track surface grip decreased. South Africa was the farthest country I have participated in so far, and I was not in the best mental condition for the race because of the fatigue from the long trip, security issues. However, the car had an advantage like never before, and I was able to win both the qualifying and the final rounds without losing a single top time. The motor I used Reedy modified, the battery was Sanyo, the ESC was GM Racing, the servo was KO PROPO, the body was Andy's, and the tires were TRC and JACO Racing. On the big stage of the world, running at a breakneck speed,
2000 1/10 Onroad World Championship CarIFMAR 1:10th EP On-Road World Championship in JAPAN
This is the second time that the EP car World Championship has been held in Japan, following the Off-road race in 1995. This time, On-road, 3 classes, 1/10th, 1/12th and ISTC (Touring) were held at the same time. The venue is Yatabe Arena in Ibaraki prefecture. It was midsummer, and the conditions were quite difficult for both humans and cars. I had participated in all three classes, and due to the fatigue from the practice and tests, I was a little exhausted when the actual event began. In addition to being held in Japan, it was also held at the home track, so I was able to participate in the race while getting sick due to the intense pressure, the heat, and the battle for the top with the strong competitors. The car which was developed for this race has changed the shape of the main chassis and all of the rear suspension systems, and introduced a special car which matches the track. In the finals, I was able to beat Mr. Daisuke Yoshioka of Team HPI for the championship, and was able to win the World Championship held in Japan for the first time. The car which contributed to the acquisition of the 11 times World Champion
1999 1/10 2WD World Championship CarIFMAR 1:10th EP Off-Road World Championship 2WD Class in Finland
At the World Championship held in Finland, the 4WD class, which started first, was in big trouble. The Yokomo's prototype car, which had been tested and practice for two years, struggled with the track layout and failed in qualifying. For the first time in a RC race, I recorded the lowest place in almost 20 years. Since I was betting everything on the 4WD class, I went to the field after only two days of practice and preliminary tests for the 2WD class. For the past two years, I have had little time to practice and test my 2WD. There is no way I can win in such a situation. Moreover, the 2WD class World Championship started with the shock of the crushing defeat of the 4WD class that challenged with full confidence. While Team Losi entered the race with a new car and Team Kyosho entered with a prototype car, Our Team Associated's car was a mature production car. Contrary to expectations, they set a series of good lap times, and although Team Losi's Mr. Brian Kinwald took the lead in qualifying, Mr. Mark Pavidis finished 2nd and I was 3rd. In the final, I won the Championship after a fierce battle between the 3 cars. This was the first and last time I won the World Championship by starting the finals from a position other than 1st place in the qualifying. The car which showed me heaven after hell and made me the 10th time World Champion
1997 1/10 4WD World Championship CarIFMAR 1:10th EP Off-Road World Championship 4WD Class in USA
The World Championship were held at the RANCH PIT SHOP in Pomona, California, USA. This track is the home of one of our biggest rivals, Team Losi. It was a completely away race. I received full support from the tire manufacturer Proline, but I believed that the track surface would definitely match Losi's tires, so I brought in a large number of Losi tires and matched my car with Losi tires. The car we used was Yokomo's new prototype, and most of the chassis, body, wing, suspension, wheels, etc. were newly designed. My team-mate Mr. Mark Pavidis, with the same setting as me, was able to finish high in qualifying, which was a big factor in getting me closer to victory. I was able to win the 4WD as well as the 2WD at the World Championship in the United States, that is said to be the most difficult to win in the world. The name of the car which won my 9th world title was the "YOKOMO MX-4".
1996 1/12 World Championship CarIFMAR 1:12th EP On-Road World Championship in USA
The first World Championship on asphalt road surface in which I participated was held at an outdoor circuit in California, USA. A Worlds car which was created by adding Yokomo's taste to Associated's car while repeating local pre-tests. The combination of American tire manufacturer JACO tires, Reedy motor, Protoform body, TEKIN ESC, and KO PROPO's equipment were the best match. After a fierce battle with Mr. Berry Baker and Mr. Brian Kinwald of the United States, it was my second victory in the 1/12th race and my 8th world title. "ASSOCIATED RC12LS Yokomo special" contributed to winning the world title for the 8th time in total by scoring top finish in both the qualifying and the final.
1994 1/10 Onroad World Championship CarIFMAR 1:10th EP On-Road World Championship in GERMANY
The second time of race commonly known as PRO10, which was newly started at IFMAR. During the short development period of about half a year, a car dedicated to World Championship was completed by repeating test runs in Germany in advance. The tires we got from the Mr. Gandini brothers of Gandini Racing Products, the tire manufacturer we met at the race track, were the best match for the track surface. And the ESC was made by TEKIN. For the body, we obtained a lightweight Protoform body, which had not yet been sold in Japan, locally, and the staff painted it on site. The week before this race, the battle for victory with Team Corally's Mr. David Spashett, who won the 1/12th World Championship held in France, was tangled up to the final round, but I was able to get the 8th World title. The "YOKOMO YRX-10 worlds special" scored top finish in both the qualifying and the finals, contributing to winning all 4 categories in which I participated.
1993 1/10 4wd World Championship CarIFMAR 1:10th EP Off-Road World Championship 4WD Class in ENGLAND
My first Off Road World Championship was also held in England. This time, our biggest rival was local Team Schumacher, who had been indebted to me before. The car which Yokomo brought in after repeated on-site tests in advance was equipped with an undercarriage that emphasized toughness and durability, with reinforced wheels and resin wings. There were Yokomo tires brought in in large quantities to match the road surface, but I purposely used the tires provided by Proline, which had faster corner speeds. In the final race, there was a scene where I fell back to the back due to my own crash, but I managed to overtake 9 cars in the final race, the first and last in my life, and finally finished in the top. "YOKOMO SUPER DOGFIGHTER WORKS 93 Worlds Special" contributed to the 6th world title by scoring top finish in both the qualifying and the finals. |
1991 1/10 2wd World Championship CarIFMAR 1:10th EP Off-Road World Championship 2WD Class in USA
The car I used was a stealth car which Associated had been developing in secret. The existence of this car was not known in advance and was handed over from Mr. Cliff Lett on site. The 30 series tires and special shock springs brought by Yokomo matched the race track, and the Stealth Car was able to gain a further advantage, but the team, which was the biggest rival team, was in a battle for victory with Team Losi squad. It was fierce until the very end. In the end, the Associated car and our team finished 1-2, and in the 2WD class, following the match against Australia, I won two tournaments in a row and won the world title for the fifth time in total. The "ASSOCIATED RC10BX STEALTH" contributed to winning the 2WD class in the USA, that was said to be the most difficult to win, by scoring top finish in both the qualifying and the final.

Masami’s 1991 Detroit Worlds Winning RC10In 1991, Masami Hirosaka drove this RC10 buggy to win an IFMAR World Championship for Team Associated. These are photos of the very RC10 Masami drove in Detroit, Michigan in this historic race.
One of the first things I noticed was the excessive use of custom machined parts. Many of the basic designs ended up in later versions of the RC10, which is cool. It makes me wonder what the heck those guys who say it’s all the driver are thinking. This buggy looks like something we would see today! And this was created in 1991? |
